This project was all about creating an abundant and diverse orchard for a fruit-loving family of four. Collaborating closely with the family, we designed and installed a selection of 20 fruit trees, including apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries, and apricots. The varieties were carefully chosen to ripen sequentially from June to October, ensuring a steady harvest throughout the growing season.
Given the property's frequent deer visits, we installed a fence that not only protects the trees from wildlife but also visually defines the orchard as a unique and inviting space. Despite a challenge with gypsy moths around the time of the spring check-in, the trees thrived and surpassed growth expectations by the end of the summer.
With this number and diversity of fruit trees, regular monitoring and some treatments will be important to achieving a high-quality harvest. We will work with the family to develop a safe, family-friendly maintenance plan. We anticipate the first fruits to be sampled from each tree next year, with the orchard reaching full productivity in 2–3 years.
