Fruit for Country Meadows Retirement Communities

We were thrilled to partner with the retirement communities of Country Meadows in Hershey, York, and Mechanicsburg to create abundant, low-maintenance fruit plantings and small fruit tree orchards for the enjoyment of their residents. The goal was to design spaces that were both productive and inviting, encouraging outdoor activity and fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Our work included small fruit tree orchards featuring apples and peaches, providing residents with the joy of seasonal harvests and the beauty of flowering trees in spring. We also planted dedicated orchards of blossoming sour cherry trees, which offer both edible sour cherries and exceptional ornamental value. Their numerous blossoms in spring create a beautiful display, making these trees as much a visual delight as they are a source of fruit.

In addition to the orchards we focused on low-maintenance small fruit plantings, selecting varieties that thrive with minimal care and require no treatments. Thornless raspberries ripen all summer long, providing an easy-to-pick snack along the walking paths. Blueberries offer a sweet treat in June, while figs ripen in September. Kiwi berries round out the selection with their October harvest.

These installations were purposefully placed along the walking routes of the campuses, encouraging residents to enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and experience the simple pleasure of fresh fruit. Together, these plantings enhance the beauty and functionality of the communities, creating vibrant spaces where nature and community thrive.
